Pete Doherty to play Manchester
28/09/2005
Controversial Babyshambles rocker Pete Doherty is set to play at the Manchester Academy on Friday, with tickets for the sold-out gig changing hands for twice their face value.
Rarely a day goes past without the chaotic former Libertines frontman making a tabloid appearance, along with his on-off girlfriend and former H&M supermodel, Kate Moss.
Babyshambles gigs are often so well attended because of Doherty's tabloid-fuelled reputation. However, the shambolic 26-year-old's recent performances with his new band have been patchy to say the least, with the singer throwing up on stage in Glasgow after downing a bottle of vodka.
Nevertheless, as the Doherty roadshow rolls into Manchester many fans will be hoping to see a return of the performer's glory days, when he and the Libertines were feted as the most important British group since the Smiths.
Debate continues to rage over Pete Doherty's status as misunderstood genius or crazed tabloid-junkie, although his trip to Manchester adds another name to the growing list of high-profile gigs the city is hosting.
In November, the cartoon-based pop innovators Gorillaz will take to the stage in Manchester's Opera House to perform their first live version of their new album, Demon Days.
